How Many Different Brands and Types of Hearing Aids Do You Sell? - A dispenser should have several different brands and types of hearing aids to choose from. No single brand or type of aid amplifies sound adequately for every hearing loss. The most common types include: behind-the-ear (BTE), in-the-ear (ITE) and in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aids. Every hearing loss is individual and different. The type and style of hearing aid that will be best for you depends on the nature and level of your hearing loss.

The microphone for ear-level hearing aids has a relatively small "effective area" within which it works maximally. When the hearing aid user is listening to talkers located beyond this effective area, the strength of the signal of interest (the talker's voice) diminishes rapidly as the distance increases, making it difficult to hear.
